My Guy Likes To Party All The Time

It is a few days after the actual first birthday and we had (a lot of) the family over to Grammy and Grampy D’s house for a celebration!

Grammy set up a ball pit that was a hit with the kids.

We socialized

Liam sort of opened presents… thankfully his cousins were more than willing to help!

We had a blast! Liam’s sugar high lasted until 8pm.

Thank you so much to everyone who could make it, you all really made this a fabulous day for us to remember!  We all had so much fun!

Circus Cupcakes

I am going to have a little bit of a brag here tonight, but first let me start with a slight explanation.
I love Pinterest. I love researching ideas and even occasionally attempting to execute them. I especially love the recipes. That said, I am very very far from the worlds way crafter or baker. I am not a horrific crafter, but would certainly scale myself towards the lower end of mediocre. Crafting just isn’t where my talents lie. Baking and cooking I feel like I am simply average. There are definitely some hits and a lot of misses on our household’s menus. So to say I am proud of how the circus themed cupcakes came out for Liam’s first birthday bash is a bit of an understatement. I am beyond thrilled, though I can’t take all the credit for myself. My handy assistant and BFF Dahlia came over to help (and spend some quality time with Liam who cried when she left).

So the first thing I did was cheat. After searching the local grocery store for an organic all natural cake mix (because I knew I wasn’t going to have time or the inclination to do this from scratch). After not finding one in a reasonable amount of time I gave in and purchased 2 boxes of Betty Crocker super moist French Vanilla cake mix. I also purchased a couple of bags of powdered sugar and a box of salt free butter for homemade frosting. The two boxes of cake mix made us 36 normal size cupcakes and 4 extra large ones which were used in the creation of Liam’s smash cake. After allowing the cake to cool overnight, dahlia came over and we whipped up a couple of bowls of frosting. The frosting recipe we used was:

2 sticks of softened salt free butter
3 cups of lightly packed powdered sugar
1 tsp of vanilla
2 tablespoons of whole milk

Blend all ingredients until well mixed, add food coloring if desired. If you are adding food coloring you may also need to add more sugar to maintain your desired frosting firmness for decorating purposes.

Then the fun part happened, the decorating of 36 cupcakes and a smash cake.

For the cupcakes we spiced up an idea that I had found on Pinterest which was to stick animal cracker in your cupcakes to decorate for a circus theme. We added sprinkles for some pizzazz.
For the smash cake we used three slices from the extra large cupcakes to make the layers. We frosted them and then mirrored the cupcakes on the top. We added a candle (of course)… and then put a parade of animals crackers circling the mini cake.

And now for the pictures 🙂

I can’t wait to get this party started!

Saturday Evening Update…. the cake was a hit (and Liam had his first sugar high)

Three Things Thursday, 5/1/14, All About Liam

Three Things Thursday is an exercise in gratitude originating over at Nerd In The Brain (another awesome blog).

This week I am going to shake things up a bit, instead of three things we are going to get three aspects of one thing… Liam.  One year ago today after a long labor we finally got to meet our Liam.  This week we are going to celebrate his life and I will list three things that I am grateful for about Liam.

Yes, that’s right, we now officially have a toddler!  This week a year ago I was stuck at 3cm for a week straight before finally getting to meet our Liam for the first time.

He was 7 lbs 15 ounces with a full head of hair… the only baby I have ever personally known to have a faux-hawk within hours of birth. My husband and I were over joyed.

He was so tiny! When he was a newborn he fit so nicely in the crook of my arm, now he spills out over the edge of my lap. It’s been a pretty busy year of development and our big guy is now walking and saying a handful of words. After a year of sleeping in 2-4 hour stretches I am now starting to enjoy 5-8 hour stretches of sleep instead. (You really don’t appreciate the value of a good nights sleep until you experience the joys of parenthood.)

The first thing is his smile and sense of humor (yes I know that is really two things).

Liam is one of those people who when he smiles it goes all the way to his eyes.  He really can light up a room, and his little laugh is infectious.  He also has a wicked sense of humor.  He loves it when you chase after him, and will wait for you to catch up and “almost” get him before taking off again.

The next thing I am thankful for is his curiosity.

Last of all I am thankful for his determination… though I am sure I will call it stubbornness and be cranky about it when he is older.

Liam is determined to do everything himself and keep up with his big cousins (M and the Bean) who are 5 months older than him.  This peppered with a nice amount of curiosity certainly keep my husband and I on our toes!  It is so much fun to watch him learn!

As a closer this is what Liam and I were doing at 5:35 this morning, the moment he turned one…. my great sleeper unfortunately had a rough night of teething last night 😦
